The Texas Movie Production Alliance (TXMPA) made an appearance at Birdie’s Social Club in Fort Worth last Wednesday to present information about the future of film incentives in Texas. The event, which was free and open to the public, featured presentations from Fort Worth Film Commissioner Taylor Hardy, TXMPA Executive Director Fred Poston and TXMPA Communications Director CJ Legare.
TXMPA staff have been traveling to cities across the Lone Star State over the last few weeks to educate Texans on the importance of supporting members from local tv and film communities. The nonprofit organization, which was established in 2006, aims to foster a collaborative environment, champion media professionals and help grow tax incentives, so Texas can remain a national leader in media production.
The Texas tv and film industry has been quite the hot topic during the 89th Texas Legislature. Last week, the Senate passed SB 22 (23-8 vote), which sets aside approximately $500 million in film incentives every two years for the next 10 years. Originally filed by State Senator Joan Huffman, the bill prohibits funding inappropriate content or negative portrayals of the State of Texas, and completed projects would need to go through a final review from the governor’s office before receiving funding.
With passage in the Senate, the bill (now HB 4568) is headed to the House for review. If passed, it will be the most amount of money ever allocated for Texas media production since the state’s film incentive grant was created in 2007.
